Recently in the UK, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) were about to pass a new law stating that every website in the EU would have to seek permission from users before cookies were set on each website.
Obviously there was uproar! This is totally impractical for website owners, and indeed users…
However, the good news is that the ICO have seen this sledgehammer-to-crack-a-nut law as being unenforcible, and have scaled back the issue to recommendations rather than legalities. This short blog from my colleague Simon Jones sums it up nicely:

He recommends that you “clearly inform your users of the cookies you use on your website and offer links to sites such as All About Cookies so users know how to remove cookies if they so wish”.
