Email services have become near-universal across a wide range of industries and personal use purposes. Countless messages are exchanged between parties every day, but with this innovation comes great risk — cyber criminals target email communications with the goal of seizing, encrypting, and holding data hostage.
Of the threats to email security, phishing is the most well-known; phishing emails consist of fraudulent communications that are meant to trick users into sharing personal information (like bank accounts, Social Security numbers). Man-in-the-middle attacks (MitM) are also prevalent, and involve third-party attackers that spy on communications between parties, with the goal of extorting users and redirecting their communications to malicious websites.
Luckily, there are plenty of ways to protect your email, mainly through encryption protocols and setting custom filters; password managers and antivirus services offer more layers of protection. At the end of the day, securing email communication is crucial towards keeping your data out of the hands of attackers.
