Many thanks to everyone once again for their support and assistance in my award of DPsych via Public Works, which I gained last week. I’m very proud to be a part of the growth of our field and all it stands for in moving counselling and psychotherapy forward into the 21st Century in light of technological developments and social change.
As promised, the abstract is below along with a list of the evidence I presented at the final manuscript stage. At my viva, I went on to describe what has been achieved since submission, such as BACP Endorsement of our trainings and our ongoing publication of TILT Magazine, as well as updates on my continuing work with BACP. After a short recess by examiners, it was decided that no revisions would be necessary, which was a huge relief!
Best to all – and thanks again 🙂
Kate
Abstract
This context statement in contribution towards a Doctorate via Public Works is a personal and professional reflection on ten years of my work in developing the counselling and psychotherapy profession in the age of the Internet and the impact of technology.
I give a reflective account of my career from gentle beginnings in finding an incidental topic for my MSc research thesis in exploring the online therapeutic relationship; through pioneering online therapy through the results of my empirical research and subsequent model; developing original guidelines for UK practitioners; and developing training programmes – online and face-to-face – for practitioners who wish to become an effective online practitioner. I go on to evidence my ground breaking work on all aspects of the use of technology for mental health, disseminating my knowledge through media and publications.
I evidence this throughout with my public works at national and international conference and in print, not least through my textbooks, the development of the Online Therapy Institute, and the International application of an Ethical Framework for the Use of Technology in Mental Health – to allow focus on where this has brought me to and how it has influenced my proposed career path in the future.
Personal material is included throughout to illustrate and communicate the journey through my process of impacting upon the profession.
